Acquirer Error Codes: 0-99

Overview

All response codes between 0 and 99 are either from the Acquiring or Issuing Bank. This article will give you an overview of the difference codes that can be returned on a transaction, along with a description of the error.

Response Codes and Messages

Code Response Description
0 Transaction approved Transaction authorised.
1 Refer to issuer The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
2 Refer to issuer, special The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
3 Invalid merchant or service provider This error indicates that either the Merchant facility is non-functional or the details entered into the Gateway are invalid.
4 Pick up card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained as the card may have been reported as lost or stolen. 
5 Do not honour The '05 - Do Not Honour' error is a generic bank response code that has several possible causes. This response can be caused by a myriad of things, including velocity checks at the bank, lack of funds, incorrect data in the request, etc. This is the vaguest reason that can be provided to Cardstream by the Card Issuing Banks and we are actually unable to elaborate any further on this.
6 Error The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should contact their card issuer and/or use an alternate payment method.
7 Pickup card, special condition (other than lost/stolen card) The Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained as the card may have been reported as lost or stolen. 
8 Honour with identification Transaction processed successfully - identification NOT required. This code is returned by some banks in place of 00 response.
9 Request in progress The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should contact their bank and/or use an alternate payment method.
10 Approved for partial amount The transaction was successful for a partial amount. 
12 Invalid transaction The bank has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field. This indicates the card details were incorrect. Check card data entered and try again.
13 Invalid amount The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field; or amount exceeds maximum for card program.
14 Invalid card number The Cardholders issuing bank has declined the transaction as the payment card number is incorrectly entered, or does not exist. 
15 No issuer The Cardholders issuer does not exist. Check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
16 Approved, update track 3 An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
17 Customer cancellation The Cardholders card issuer has prevented this transaction from taking place due to cancellation. 
18 Customer dispute The Cardholders card issuer has prevented this transaction from taking place due to an ongoing or previous dispute. 
19 Re-enter last transaction The transaction has not been processed and the Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again. No further information is provided from the bank as to the reason why this was not processed.
20 Invalid response/acquirer error The bank has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field. This indicates the card details were incorrect. Check card data entered and try again.
21 No action taken The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the payment card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
22 Suspected malfunction The Cardholders issuer could not be contacted during the transaction. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
23 Unacceptable transaction An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
24 File update impossible An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
25 Unable to locate record on file The Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
26 Duplicate reference number The Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
27 Error in reference number The Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
28 File is temporarily unavailable for update An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
29 File action failed/contact acquirer An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
30 Format error The Cardholders issuer does not recognise the transaction details being entered. This is due to a format error. The Cardholder should check the transaction information and try processing the transaction again.
31 Bank not supported by switch The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it does not allow transactions originating through mail/telephone, fax, email or Internet orders. 
32 Complete partially The transaction was successful for a partial amount. 
33 Expired card, capture The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as card has expired or the date is incorrect. Check the expiry date in the transaction and try processing the transaction again.
34 Suspected fraud, retain card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as there is a suspected fraud on this credit card number.
35 Card acceptor, contact acquirer, retain card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained as the card was reported as lost or stolen.
36 Restricted card, retain card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained.
37 Contact acquirer security department, retain card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained.
38 Pin tries exceeded, capture The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has entered the incorrect PIN three times.
39 No credit account The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number used is not a credit account.
40 Function not supported The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it does not allow this type of transaction.
41 Lost card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the card has been reported lost. 
42 No universal account The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the account type selected is not valid for this card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
43 Stolen card The Cardholders card has been reported as stolen.
44 No investment account The Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction as the account type selected is not valid for this payment card number.
45 Account closed The Cardholder card issuer has advised the payment account is closed. 
46 Identification required The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
47 Identification cross-check required An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
48 No from account An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
49 No to account An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
50 No account An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
51 Insufficient funds The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card does not have sufficient funds.
52 No cheque account The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card number is associated to a cheque account that does not exist.
53 No savings account The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number is associated to a savings account that does not exist.
54 Expired card The Cardholders card is expired.
55 Incorrect pin The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the customer has entered an incorrect PIN.
56 No card record The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number does not exist. The Cardholder should re-enter their card details, or use an alternate payment method. 
57 Function not permitted to cardholder The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this payment card cannot be used for this type of transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
58 Function not permitted to terminal The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this payment card cannot be used for this type of transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
59 Suspected fraud The Cardholders issuer has declined this transaction as the credit card appears to be fraudulent. 
60 Contact acquirer The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction. The Cardholder should contact their bank and retry the transaction.
61 Exceeds withdrawal limit The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it will exceed the Cardholders card limit. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or speak with their bank.
62 Restricted card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card has some restrictions. The customer should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
63 Security violation The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method and contact their bank.
64 Original amount incorrect The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction due to the amount attempting to be processed. The Cardholder should check the transaction amount and try again, contacting the issuer should the problem persist.
65 Exceeds withdrawal The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has exceeded the withdrawal frequency limit.
66 Contact acquirer The Cardholder should use an alternative payment method. 
67 Capture card The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the card is suspected to be a counterfeit. The Cardholders issuer has requested that the Cardholders card is retained. 
68 Time out The Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
69 Advice received too late The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
70 Contact card issuer The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested the Cardholder to contact the bank.
71 Message flow error An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
72 Authorization center not available for 60 seconds The Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
73 Authorization center not available for 300 seconds The Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
74 Pin entry necessary The Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
75 Pin tries exceeded The Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has entered the incorrect PIN more than three times.
76 Unable to locate previous message (no match on retrieval reference number) An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
77 Previous message located for a repeat or reversal, but repeat or reversal data are inconsistent with original message The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
78 Blocked, first used. The transaction is from a new cardholder, and the card has not been properly unblocked The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
79 Already reversed The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
80 Visa transactions: credit issuer unavailable. Private label and check acceptance: invalid date' An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
81 Pin cryptographic error found (error found by vic security module during pin decryption)' The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
82 Cvv validation error The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the CVV is incorrect. The Cardholders should check the CVV details and try again. If not successful, the Cardholder should use an alternate payment method.
83 Negative cam, dcvv, icvv, or cvv results The Cardholders issuer was not able to process the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
84 Pre-auth time too great An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
85 No reason to decline a request for account number verification, address verification, cvv2 verification, or a credit voucher or merchandise return The Cardholders issuer was not able to process the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
86 Unable to verify pin An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
87 Purchase amount only, no cash back allowed The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction because amount exceeds maximum for card program.
88 Unable to authorise An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
89 Ineligible to receive An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
90 Cutoff in progress The Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
91 Card issuer unavailable The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
92 Unable to route transaction The Cardholders issuer cannot be found for routing. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
93 Cannot complete, violation of the law The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested the Cardholder to contact the bank.
94 Duplicate transaction The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this transaction appears to be a duplicate transmission.
96 System error The Cardholders issuer was not able to process the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
97 Security breach The Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested the Cardholder to contact the bank.
98 Date and time not plausible The Cardholders issuer was not able to process the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
99 Error in pac encryption detected The Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
