Checking AVS on Transactions
The Address Verification Service (AVS) checks both the Address Line and the Postcode. However, the AVS will only verify the numeric portion of an address. Therefore any other characters should not cause an issue with the AVS.
For example, for the following example addresses:
Flat 6 Primrose Rise 347 Lavender Road Northampton NN17 8YG
23 Rogerham Mansions 4578 Ermine Street Borehamwood WD54 8TH
Unit 5 Pickwick Walk 120 Uxbridge Road Hatch End Middlesex HA6 7HJ
When this data is submitted and provided to the Acquirer in the transaction request, the following numbers are used for the AVS check;
6 3 4 7 1 7 8
2 3 4 5 7 8 5 4 8
5 1 2 0 6 7
We would like to take this opportunity to clarify that this information has been provided to offer you some guidance on relation to the service and it is not a confirmation. As the AVS validation is performed by participating Card Issuing Banks only, if definitive guidance is required in relation to a specific AVS response, the Cardholder should contact their Issuing bank for further details.
As a reminder the AVS validation is performed on the numeric data which is provided to the acquirer within the Street Number, Street Name and Postcode/Zip code parameters of the transaction request.
Some Cardholders may have a more complex and confusing address, similar to the one below. This is how the Card Issuing Bank has the address listed:
4A Rear of 1A-5A, The Hay Market, Grantham, NG32 4HG
However, the Cardholder may have provided you with:
The Willow, 4, The Hay Market, Grantham, NG32 4HG
If the Card Issuing Bank has this payment card associated with the above address (orange), this could cause a ‘Partial Match’ when AVS is performed.
With this data provided to the Acquirer in the transaction request, the following numbers would be used for the AVS check;
4 3 2 4
However, because the card is actually registered to the orange address, then this will need to match this data (depending how the data is stored with the Card Issuing Bank);
4 1 5 3 2 4
Therefore, to conclude all AVS data is checked with the Card Issuing Bank and they are the ones who provide the Gateway and the Acquirer with a response message. The AVS Preferences can be configured and reviewed within the Preferences tab of the Merchant Management System (MMS).
